Questions for Former Volunteers

Listed below are some suggested questions to ask former volunteers. These questions, and your conversations with former volunteers, will no doubt lead to other questions you would like to ask.

  • Have you volunteered overseas before?
  • What considerations led you to choose the organization you volunteered for?
  • Was the program what you expected? If not, how did it differ both positively and negatively from the program you expected?
  • Were you comfortable with the program physical requirements?
  • Were you satisfied with the support and training at the location?
  • How were the accommodations and food?
  • Were you satisfied with the health and security arrangements?
  • Were you satisfied with your organization’s pre-trip preparation advice?
  • Is there anything you didn’t do in preparation for the trip that you would do before another trip?
  • Do you have any packing advice—including items that you didn’t take or those that you did take and didn’t need?
  • What arrangements did you make for your personal responsibilities (housing, bills, pets, etc.) at home?
  • What was the most difficult part of your experience?
  • What was the most rewarding part of your experience?
  • Would you do it again?
  • Has your volunteer experience affected your thinking and way of life back home? If so how?
